You get 3 skill points a level, once you get a certain # of skill points allocated into your skills you unlock the next one. Now he had it set at 999 so I couldn't unlock the next skills. Oh and I selected them in battle and didn't work because they had no skill points because I couldn't level up.

I did and it didn't, because killing everything in one hit isn't fun.
If one were to ascend, you won't kill EVERYTHING in one hit.
