You just goto usergroups in the user control panel.

He might've been talking about changing your group.

And the creative rank isn't the default rank for the creatives group, which is why his rank doesn't change. I'm pretty sure that the admins didn't want everyone in the creatives group to have a special rank, otherwise everyone would want to join the creatives.
