The "all your base are belong to us" genre is both pretty expansive and unoriginal: solarmax, spiral drive, jellyGo, tentacle wars and maybe recapture are about the only original ones of this genre I know of. (TD games have about 3-4 original games.)
oh yeah, and galactic colonization was another fun one, (though a nearly impossible grind without hacks.)
